Judie Mancuso, co-author of Senate Bill 250 requiring mandatory sterilization for dogs and cats in California, has been busy attacking and accusing me of spreading ‘the worse type of deceitful information about spay and neuter legislation”.

PetPAC haters wish to change the debate on the merits of Senate Bill 250 into personal attacks on me because they can’t tell the truth about the facts on SB 250. Ms. Mancuso’s claims are slanderous and libelous. But if you don’t want to take my word for it, read what the State of California says about SB 250.

According to the State of California Department of Finance Analysis, SB 250 won’t work because “Mandatory spay and neuter provisions have failed throughout California at the local government level”. They also say more pets are likely to be killed (30% increase) in shelters if this passes. Finally, SB 250 will drain millions from the General Fund.

Help us fight off the slanderous and libelous statements being made by our opponents in a desperate attempt to pass mandatory sterilization legislation. Please contribute to the say NO to SB 250 campaign!

SACRAMENTO, CA (July 10. 2009) – Yesterday, the California Department of Public Health released 2008 annual data for every county’s animal shelter system.

In comparison to 2007 data, last year saw an expected increase in shelter admissions, owner surrenders, abandoned dogs and euthanasia rates that can be attributed mostly to the severe recession that has devastated the entire state’s economy.

But one county’s animal control and sheltering program stood out as being 11 times worse off than the rest of the state: Los Angeles County, which passed a mandatory spay and neuter ordinance last year. The data conclusively proves the murderous impact of pet sterilization mandates that far exceeds anything that can be attributed to the statewide recession.

This data has special importance now, as the California Assembly is considering Senate Bill 250, which would mandate the sterilization of almost every dog in the state, either directly or indirectly. If California follows the path of destruction caused by the Los Angeles ordinance, passage of SB 250 will become an unfunded mandate to the counties to handle 11 times as many dogs and cats at animal shelters, and to kill 11 times more of them, the data shows clearly.

If the state mirrors the Los Angeles statistics, counties would have to pay for handling 4.4 million dogs and cats a year (up from 402,430 in 2008), and killing 1.7 million dogs (up from 153,793 in 2008).

It is IMPERATIVE for California dog owners and animal lovers to make this information available to members of the California General Assembly, and especially to members of the Assembly Appropriations Committee, which has set a July 15 hearing on SB 250. Contact information will be provided below.

Here is a summary of yesterday’s release of the statewide shelter data:

In 2008, 404,430 animals were admitted to shelters statewide, an increase of 42,422 from 2007. That is an 11.8-percent increase.

In 2008, 96,630 animals were admitted to the Los Angeles County sheltering system, which is a 55,178 increase from 2007. This is a 133-percent increase in the year after a spay/neuter mandate was passed into law. If compared to the state, it is apparent that Los Angeles County alone exceeded the entire statewide increase in shelter admissions, and is 11 times higher than the state average.

Euthanasia data is equally dramatic. In 2008, the entire state saw a 16.4-percent increase in euthanasia, to 153,793 (an increase of 21,677).

However, almost all of the entire statewide increase in shelter euthanasia came from Los Angeles County alone, in the year following a mandatory pet sterilization ordinance. The Los Angeles County shelter system euthanasia rate rose by an incredible 178-percent in the year following the ordinance. In 2007, 12,118 dogs had to be killed in the county. In 2008, this soared to 33,601 dogs.

The American Sporting Dog Alliance wants our readers to check out the official shelter data, and to verify that all of our assertions are true and accurate. We are not exaggerating. This is how the official data adds up.

The data shows many other things that accurately predict the bloody outcome of a mandatory pet sterilization law, such as SB 250.

In Los Angeles, following the spay/neuter ordinance, this has included a 107-percent increase in animal control captures of abandoned dogs, a 163-percent increase in owner surrenders by people who cannot afford to keep their pets and comply with the law, and a 153-percent increase in abandoned dogs brought to the shelters by good Samaritans, the official state data shows.

The images of what would happen statewide if SB 250 passes are truly frightening to comprehend, based on what actually has happened in Los Angeles, and what also has happened in every community in America that has passed a similar law.

The results will be dramatic increases in municipal costs for animal control and sheltering, with the most terrible price paid by the millions of dogs that will be killed needlessly because of this kind of law.

The American Sporting Dog Alliance is urging all California dog owners to take immediate action, before the Assembly Committee on Appropriations holds a hearing on SB 250 on July 15. It is urgent that a large number of Californians – not just dog owners, but everyone who cares – express clear opposition to SB 250, which is very close to being passed into law.

Remember that the Appropriations Committee deals mostly with financial aspects of legislation, such as the outlay of government funds.

HSUS Search & Seizure of Dogs will Cost YOU!

Petdefense will be publishing a condensed video re the HSUS claiming that certain dog owners were alleged to own dogs or sell dogs used for ‘fighting’, which shows John P Goodwin of the HSUS and their team, on the owner’s property. [This was not an HSUS SWAT raid where they use the helicopter] The owner’s dogs were seized and taken to a shelter which clearly does not provide proper care for animals, as evidenced by the video. Contrary to COURT ORDER the dogs were kept for 4 months rather than 10-12 days!!

The dogs belonging to owner were not, and clearly are not used nor sold for fighting, nor have they ever been used in that manner; In fact, the dogs are used in weight pull competition and other sanctioned dog show activities. There is and was absolutely no evidence that any of the dogs were or have ever been used or sold, transported, or otherwise—- in the alleged realm of ‘fighting.’

Dog owners need to prepare in advance for this type of search and seizure, and have your cameras, videos, and evidence ready in advance. Make sure your computers and phones (esp. cell phones) are not with you, lest they be seized for evidence and subject to tampering. Case law currently has contradictory decisions as to whether one’s cell phone may be seized and used for evidence, so if you own a throw away phone (which has no billing record) you might want to consider using that. It has become necessary to even say this, due to the overreaching antics of HSUS search and seizure. You will never realize how bad it is unless it happens to YOU. Also beware of anything you say on open forums online, as HSUS attempts to keep this as evidence against people for court.

If you train your dog with a treadmill, which is normally not illegal in most jurisdictions, make sure to tell your vet you are training your dog, and have the vet record that you are training it in the dog’s vet records. Also write down what your vet says to you in regard to building strength on treadmills. In addition, make sure you have adquate vet records of the vaccinations and licensing. Further, make sure you have measurements and pictures of the crates used for kenneling.

We say this because Animal Control in Southern California is claiming the owner’s crates were too small and that it was ANIMAL CRUELTY!! They also filed 14 misdemeanor counts against owner!!

The crates were NOT too small, but they were seized. So owners beware–make sure if your dogs are in crates, that crates are big enough. HSUS likes to claim abuse in any way possible, even if it includes lying. Also make sure to have a sign out front of the house which indicates you have surveillance cameras. Animal control hates surveillance cameras. Our experience has shown that if they believe they are being filmed they would rather target someone else?

The same owner in Southern California (Garden Grove) has been threatened with arrest should he even attempt to ENTER the animal control shelter?!! This is ridiculous and likely illegal.

Search warrants are being issued due to HSUS pushing local animal control and humane societies. If owners do not take a firm stand by uniting together against HSUS (Humane Society of the United States, based out of Washington DC)—- you will end up losing your rights to own a bully dog, pitbull dog, APBT, and anything that even looks like an APBT.

Currently Wayne Pacelle of the HSUS is lobbying in person in Sacramento, CA for the legislature to pass the HSUS proposed bills, of which there are at least 10-12 bills.

We need people to get their clubs together to oppose ALL of HSUS bills, no matter what the bill is. PetPAC currently has about 3-4 advocates that are usually at the Capitol attempting to oppose all HSUS bills. You can oppose these bills starting next week by going to petpac.net and signing up to oppose and be counted.

Legislators are to do the work FOR the people, NOT against the people. Currently Dean Florez, a Hispanic legislator from Central California, is helping the HSUS push all of their bills. This is a sell-out to the Hispanic community and dog owners in all of California. Tell everyone you know NOT to vote for Dean Florez—no matter what he runs for in California!!

Rohnert Park Dog Fair

We went to Rohnert Park for the Education Foundation’s Dog Fair to demonstrate weight pull. It was a lot of fun and promoted our club and weight pull kart. Many dog owners have never heard of such a thing so it was great to educate people in the working dog. Here are a few pictures from that day.

Thank you for all who came help support our breed and our club at our 1st Annual Fun Show in Woodland this past weekend! It was a great turnout and nice to see a variety of dogs out there. We have pictures that will be on our site in the next week, we got a lot of great ones!
